Hi everyone
I have a laptop with R5 3500U and 8GB ram (can’t upgrade its ram)
I want to have a very lightweight Windows.
So after using NTLite, removed xbox, onedrive, defender and many other things.
Doing this level of debloating causes windows update failures. .net updates install without any problem but cumulative updates won’t install with WU.
Do you have any suggestions? Which components and features are safe to remove? Which service deactivation and registers do you recommend?
On windows 10 everything is fast but windows 11 makes my pc slow as an old guy!

Config: 3500U + vega8 + 8GB ram + 256 ssd

Removing Defender tends to break WU. If you want to update your Windows normally, then disable Defender services instead of removing it.

the version I'm testing has nothing but those components which NTLite prevents from removing. so snipping tool removed from components part. after installing windows and snipping tool from MS Store, it's not working and shows me an error. I think windows is using two snipping tools at the same time. first an old version from windows 10 which redirects to the modern one. am I right? should I add "snipping tool component" to make sure the new version of snipping tool works well?
 
I also have a question about editing registry

we can make more than 100 reg files and add them to ntlite.
we can also make 1 reg file and define everything inside it (mixture of dwords) is it safe to do it? I'm asking this question because I have concerns about some of my reg files which may not work properly. I'm debugging them. if one of them does not work, ntlite goes to other reg files but I don't know it's behavior when using one big reg file including more than one hundred dwords and strings.
 
more than those components and features which dear Nuhi deactivated by default, which other components and features do you recommend not to remove so base functions of windows remain working and WU does not mess up my configs. Snipping tool and lock screen should not be removed for example. I don't use this laptop in network, it doesn't have a touchscreen.

Without an attached preset, it's hard to comment on what other dependencies you may have removed.

NTLite doesn't really care if you have 1 or 100 reg files. It will import them either way. I don't know if there's a practical limit on how many imported files a preset can include.

For improved organization, it's better to break up reg files into groups based on Windows features. A single file makes it difficult to locate a change, and mistakes are harder to find.

I'm modifying Windows 11 to have more speed. for example after doing these tweaks, right click is faster. (on previous version righ click had 2 sec delay!) never had this problem on Win10 (IoT Enterprise LTSC)
the only thing I'm going to do is using office, web browsing, using some engineering apps.
Snipping tool is necessary for me so I enabled it again. but some components are not necessary for me as I'm not gonna use a VM on 8GB ram. or I'm not playing games on it. Defender is not an option because I use ESET. but I want my os to be fresh so I need WU. OneDrive is also another thing I have never used in these years.

* Note: after installing eset it will disable defender, but defender service is active in the background and using 200MB of ram. That's why I'm disabling it. Security concerns? I don't know.

After using this preset and using WindowsOptimizer script memory usage dropped to 2GB on 8GB RAM. 120 processes running in the background after installing all of my apps. Do you have any recommendations to reduce ram usage more than this without breaking main parts of windows? ram usage is still better on windows 10 (official iso) on this hardware… I think modifying windows 10 IoT LTSC causes better performance. What do you think?
 
LTSC is missing many "consumer" features, because it's targeted for an office environment where IT maintains strict control over what software is installed. Some users feel it's less work to debloat LTSC, rather than starting from Retail.

The drawback is LTSC is also missing some features a home user might really want. In the end, it depends on your apps.

Thank you dear Garlin. you always help me and give me a short direct answer that solves my problem. I appreciate it.
as I'm going to use this machine just to run ABAQUS and Office at the same time to create some structural analysis and report the results to the Manager, IoT LTSC is a good choice.
I'm downloading en-us_windows_10_iot_enterprise_ltsc_2021_x64_dvd_257ad90f.iso which is the latest version but it's an old image that I want to upgrade it before installation. [19044.1288] (Updated October 2021)
which updates should I add to this image with NTLite? KB5061087 is enough and compatible with this old image?
(as I'm using 10 IoT on another machine in the office, I'm sure that KB updates are identical with consumer and IoT images but I'm not sure that this update contains everything for 19044.1288 image)

Latest LCU is KB5060533 (June 2025) -> 19044.5965

Whenever you don't see NTLite offer you the right updates (it's really a curated list, and not tied to the actual loaded image), find the KB page from the Updates history. Scroll down to the bottom, and search for the Update Catalog tab. There should be a Microsoft Update Catalog link.
