Can i burn an untouched LTSC 2021 5gb+ iso to a dual layer dvd?
Windows 7 8.1 and LTSC 1809(17763.1) all fit on single layer discs(i only use single layer) but LTSC 2021 does not so i would have to buy dual layer specifically but i cant waste the expensive if it does not.

Does it have to be a DVD? Even very old machines can boot from USB drives and USB flash drives are cheap. Also, copying an ISO to a USB flash drive is easier, non-permanent (unless you use rewriteable DVD media) and probably quicker too than burning DVDs.

Yes it does have to be dvd because that is my preferred backup and windows installation method.

Fair. But then I wouldn't know for certain as I haven't used any optical media for software installations since Windows XP days. I used them for video and I only remember that DL DVD had just over 8GB capacity (almost double the standard 4.7GB), so anything under 8GB should fit on it. So, I'm pretty sure that 5GB would be OK.

DVD burning software should give you some clues as to how much stuff it can fit on given format. Isn't there some recording simulation mode in burning apps? You drop the data, select media format and the app should tell you if it'll fit even without actual media present in the drive.

Nero 9(my preferred burning software) reports that only 4.3GB is availible on a single layer.
It may burn the iso but does windows installation actually work though?

Right, like with HDDs and SSD you don't actually get the specced capacity.

Will it boot? That, I can't tell you. Like I said, it's been a long time since I booted anything off of any optical medium. Hopefully someone else will chime in. Cheers!

Windows ISO's which are available for direct downloads are provided in WIM format, because the target audience is IT pro's who want to update the image. You can convert the install.wim to ESD format, to reduce the overall ISO size for deployment.

This should get you under the 4.3 GB limit for LTSC 2021.
