Can source and target OS differ?

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing NTLite. I would like to activate NTLite on a Win10 machine, create a customized Win11 iso there, and then deploy that ISO on a new Win11 machine so that it starts its new life nice and svelte and privacy respecting. That said, I cannot figure out the relevance of the Deployed vs Mounted distinction on the Image tab; I cannot change what is under Deployed and am concerned the tool is using the Win10 OS somehow in building the ISO and I do not wish to brick the new PC in the course of evaluating this.

Generally speaking, will NTLite allow for my activated machine to be Win10 and create a Win11 ISO there for use in deployment on a Win11 machine?

Deployed : This is used to make modifications directly under the installed Windows
Mouted : Is used to make modifications to an ISO/image.

You can easily use NTLite to modify an image to install it on another one of your PCs

For offline servicing, W10 and 11 are considered the same platform and can create install images for each other. W10/11 can also create W8 images, but W11 isn't officially supported for creating W7 images.

NTLite has an additional feature to increase servicing compatibility by borrowing the target image's copy of DISM to update the image. Every W10/11 LCU includes the latest SSU (at the time of the CU's release), which is then used for servicing.

Besides updating an offline image, NTLite allows you to apply changes to the live host (C:\Windows).

This includes advanced features like Host refresh (basically a repair install to restore missing components), and Remove reinstalls (re-remove components restored by applying a Monthly CU). When you make changes to the live host, NTLite is smart enough to check they're relevant to the current host OS release.
 
Perfect, just what I needed to know. I'll need to put in some time to be able to some of those things you mentioned, but wanted to know my goals were at least achievable before doing so. Many thanks
