DISM Engine Picker Feature question

Given you are now able to deliberately set what DISM.exe NTLite uses, it made me think of one important question: if you have ADK 10.0.17763.1 (corresponding to Windows 10 1809) installed on a Windows 7 host, would this allow you to perform the full range of editing a Windows 10 1809 (and even Windows 8.1) ISO image on said host?

I ask this because it would be very liberating from needing to use a Windows 10 host for this sort of thing.

No. This question has been answered by older threads. You cannot run a W8+ DISM on a W7 platform because DISM has a dependency on the WOF.sys virtual filesystem driver. That driver doesn't run on W7, nor has anyone created an alternative.

It's the same reason you can't run DISM to integrate updates on a Linux or Mac platform. The driver is required to support some of the file link counting features used to create a compact, de-duped WIM image.

The issue was never with DISM itself
it's with the target image's servicing stack components that get loaded when you run servicing operations

they broke compatibily when the secure boot certificates madness began in 2024 or so
securebootai.dll started using BCryptHash function, which only exist on Windows 10 host
then, few other DLLs started requiring Win10-only dlls or functions

even Windows 11 24H2 and later broke compatibility with Win10 itself at some point, and required functions/dlls that exist only on Server 2022 at minimum
