GamerOS Windows 10 & 11 DIY Preset

This is one of the reasons I dislike newbies taking premade builds and not truely knowing what it is going to do. When I first got Ntlite I went through it on my own and learned(good and bad) from the program. Once I got comfortable with my system were I wanted it to be I added other builds just to see if there was anything I might have missed or could use in addition to my build.

I am not looking down on you at all. It's like crawling before walking before running. Sometimes slow learning is better then being handed to you.
A pleasantly humble response, I appreciate your input. I've decided to just go for the Optimized Image Guide from Hellbovine instead of this preset. Are there any resources for learning NTLite all-in-one? I don't really have much time to scour through the entire forum to find details about single things, but I'd love to sit and learn about the program from top to bottom in a course-like presentation.

Sit and learn will be the best teacher. Look at things....read what the component does and test on a virtual or backup.

You can read everything but nothing quite teaches you as much as directly doing it yourself.

What would be File Explorer and Legacy File Explorer?
Are any of them necessary for normal use, searching for files, opening a folder, selecting, copying, etc.?

yes they are

File explorer helps you explore the files on the system, obviously. the Legacy version is the old school version of file explorer

luckscent is talking about the strange new Placeholder. I can imagine it's related to the upcoming 23H2 Explorer changes.

So after about a year with NTlite and a lot of experimentation and testing I've create this for all game enthusiasts, it is basic windows meant for gaming, I myself mainly play and tested this with cs go, I hope that I've maintained other features needed for gaming and such programs that one would use well playing a game now it may not be the best because I don't claim to know everything and would love others input but alas I'll shut up and give it to you, and remember always GLHF
Is this fine as a daily driver too for just gaming, browsing and the occasional word document?

not entirely sure what you mean by a 'daily driver' but the gamerOS is primarily aimed at gaming. browsing and occasional word docs are so far issue free , so yes you should be able to use the preset to do all those things you mentioned.

GamerOS removes Edge, so you would have to restore it or install your own browser. If you're using O365, Microsoft Passport is required.

Basically to be used on a daily basis as is for basic tasks.

Yes. I don't used Edge anyways. Hard pass on O365 . Office 2010 is all I need.

You may want to keep Edge (Legacy), which is the IE11 compatibility library. Some random apps need its HTML parsing functions.
But it's not a full browser instance.

Hey! I have a question. How well does this GamerOS work with other programs? I mean, it seems that this OS is aimed for gamers, but I was wondering if this OS works well all the software out there (browser, coding, video editing, regular windows tasks, etc...)

Specialized apps like video editing may have different requirements for HW support and libraries, but users have found GamerOS to work fine with normal apps.

If you were to rank GamerOS on a scale from 1 (normal Windows) to 10 (stripped to death), it would be a 6 or 7.

As someone who is currently using it , I have no issues with audio and video editing. regular windows tasks are normal. coding wise, i honestly can't comment.

As a user, I haven't noticed any difference. Everything I have installed works. Any older games installed their required dependencies. I've compiled a few things from source with no issue. Just be careful of nefarious sites and programs. That should be business as usual.

Sorry for the newb question but I was wondering what are the differences between this version https://www.ntlite.com/community/index.php?threads/gameros-windows-10-11-diy-preset.2350/post-35750 which I'd call gamerOSlight and this version https://www.ntlite.com/community/index.php?threads/gameros-windows-10-11-diy-preset.2350/post-35752 ?

From what I understood the main difference is the second version not having Windows Defender, UAC and updates?

I don't need a preset that is super hardcore, I just wanted no telemetry and no windows apps bloat (cortana, onedrive, etc etc), but I also don't want windows defender since I'll install a 3rd party antivirus anyway. I assume my best course of action would be taking the gamerOSlight preset and removing windows defender from it and that should be it? Using the latest Win10 LTSC btw.

I was wondering what are the differences between this version...
To figure out the differences between any presets, use a file comparison tool of your choice (link) and point it at the XML files. In this scenario, download both versions of the GamerOS and compare them. You can even compare GamerOS to other presets, such as the built-in templates of NTLite or whatever else. This file comparison method shows the user everything, no matter how big or small the differences are.

'GamerOS 5.20.2023.xml' removes more than 'GamerOS Features w App.xml'.

When using someone else's preset or debloat script, you're putting your trust in their choices of what to remove. This may not work out well for your set of apps or games. The general version of GamerOS tries to balance having most normal apps still work, while Txmmy's private version goes full debloat mode at the expense of compatibility.

Bottom line: you can't tell unless you install and test either preset. A quick review of the XML file in Notepad gives you a rough idea of what's missing from the image.

As you do. I put my(actual) stuff out and to tell people to test and adjust as needed.
