Microsoft Cloud Rebuild

Well, I guess with the introduction of Microsoft Cloud Rebuild in Windows 11 stable, NTLite is obsolete except for special use cases. Cloud Rebuild doesn't just download the latest stable Windows image like the MCT does. It also uses DISM to integrate the latest cumulative update if it's not already included. In my case, I was already running the October preview update so Cloud Rebuild used DISM to integrate it prior to reinstalling Windows. Of course, Cloud Rebuild also integrates the latest hardware drivers that are available in Windows Update.

Let's objectively look at Cloud Rebuild's features. If you have a working WinRE, it will reinstall Windows from a downloaded image (probably the most recent build that's provided by MCT), and a set of default drivers.

But what doesn't Cloud Rebuild do?

1. Cloud Rebuild requires a working WinRE. If you have damaged the system to where WinRE is broken, Cloud Rebuild is not available.

2. Cloud Rebuild does not offer you the option to install a specific Windows build. Nor does it support older End-of-Life versions of Windows (if that was what you installed before). Some users may have a requirement for an exact build, for compatibility reasons.

3. You don't get any custom drivers, just whatever Windows Update matches for your system. Now I haven't tested Cloud Rebuild myself, but the open question is does it import your WinRE drivers into the re-installed image? Otherwise it fares no better than a clean ISO missing any required storage drivers, like some PC's with Intel RST controllers.

4. Cloud Rebuild doesn't re-install any 3rd-party apps like an ISO with Post-Setup tasks.

5. It doesn't provide the option to skip MS Account creation, or auto-create your previous user account. Although BypassNRO and "start ms-cxh:localonly" are available if you're aware of those hacks.

If you're judging NTLite's usefulness simply by "I need to create an updated ISO once in a while, with no custom removals or Post-Setup actions", then you're not taking full advantage of all the features. And that may be the case for some users. Others will still find it useful if they're always working to tinker on the custom installs.

Cloud Rebuild is mostly intended (at this point) for the non-technical user who isn't so knowledgeable or prepared enough to have a ready set of backups, or created a ready-to-use install USB for an emergency. So waiting for a network-based re-install is a lifesaver to them, especially if they don't have access to someone technical to guide them through a re-install.

I expect MS to evolve this feature over time, and add more functionality. But NTLite has more utility than just prepping a basic install ISO, if you're willing to invest the time.
