Hi,
I just installed the latest Windows updates (KB5048667, KB5045934, and KB890830) and thereafter - as usual - started NTL for removing the reinstallations.
While doing this NTL crashed, I restarted and crashed again, and again, and again, without giving any error message.
I'll attach hereto the corresponding log files and hope that someone can help me to find out the reason and/or how to overcome the crash. I know that NTL did not remove all reinstallations before it crashed.
Ah, I'm using the latest version 2024.12.10210 of NTL.
1000 thanks in advance for your support.
Peter

Hi,

thank you for reporting.
Mine passed fine, so let's see what could it be.
First do you have %temp%\ntlite.dmp file?
If not, I'll have to send you a special version with more logging tomorrow, today is too late.
It stops in log at "Entfernen von: Veraltete symbolische Links".

What I would do, if you cannot wait to clean:

- start NTLite with ntlite.exe /forcelistcomponents
- load C:\Windows
- load your original preset
- Recheck (don't remove) Veraltete symbolische Links
- Apply.

Does that pass?

Hi nuhi,

1000 thanks that you answered that fast!!!!

Sorry, but no, there is no %temp%\ntlite.dmp file.-

I could wait until tomorrow, but I was curious to see what your second alternative would bring up. So I started it and it passed well.

After a restart Windows started well but then periodically I'm periodically getting an error message from ctfmon (see attachment).

What can I do to get rid of that?

And: shall I still wait for and then test with the "special version"?

Have a good night out there!

I did an sfc /scannow but it did not help.

The eventviewer does not give me an error...

OK, so the crash cause is Symbolic Links removal, you can wait for the special version regarding that, today.

As for CTFMon crash, it can happen when Windows Update half-returns some component.
Simply run NTLite - Tools - Remove Reinstalls and it will clean it, repeat that after each Windows Update monthly.

Also if you used it on C:\Windows and previously it was aborted constantly during removals as it was crashing, then you might need to fix it with the same preset and updated ISO image using the Host Refresh method.

If remove reinstalls does not help, and you need to run the fix, please wait until we catch the crash cause first as there is a chance that will be gone as well.

Thank you so much!

Only to avoid misunderstandings: the CTFmon crash did not happen after the Windows updates, but after having run then ntlite.exe /forcelistcomponents only.

Sent you the test version for the removal crash.

Regarding CTFMon, let's fix the crash, then potentially fully running Remove Reinstalls will fix it, if not, run Host Refresh to fix it.
And I wrote down to test this scenario of forced double-removal of CTFMon causing that popup.

Thank you so much nuhi!
This afternoon I'll restore the system with an image from before the Windows update, then update it and after that I'll run NTL for removing the reinstallations.
When done - may be tonight only - I'll send you the necessary logfile.
Thanks again so far!

Ok, here I am again.-
The steps I did:
1. restore the system with an image taken before updating Windows.
2. starting this system and updating.
3. I started the special NTL version but it stopped at a certain point and did not continue nor reacted
4. I stopped it via taskmanager
5. I rebooted Windows
6. while shutting down it reported me that updates are in work (????)
7. after a while it restarted and again advised me that updates are in work but finally it came up.
8. I repeated the steps 3-7 several times...
9. then I searched the internet about the boot loop and found a solution for a similar situation where the solution was to reinstall the previously uninstalled en-US language pack.
10. there was a link to your forum where I downloaded the Feature and Language Pack iso-file and installed the en-US package
11. I shutdown and restarted Windows and the "updates in work" messages were gone.
12. again I started the special NTL version and it worked
13. ... but unfortunately again it crashed at exactly the same point like initially.

And also unfortunately again there was no %temp%\ntlite.dmp file.

The last software I installed on Windows (and I was not using it ever before) was Directory Opus. I can imagine that this one is the culprit instisting in the en-US language pack.

So, now I'll restore my system with the last image taken before installing Directory Opus and then try it again with the updates and removing the reinstalls. I'm dreaming of a succesfull result and will report it to you as soon I know if my dream will have become true.

Thank your so far for all your efforts!!!!

Peter

Doing the updates and then the removal of reinstallations on the previous system image without Directory Opus resulted in exactly the same result with the "normal" NTL and the special NTL crashing at "Entfernen von: Veraltete symbolische Links". Only the reboot loop with "updates in work" is not coming up again.

Hi,

sorry for the delay.

6. When Windows starts configuring components in parallel, that's normal.

What I needed to see why the crash happens was the log of the removal, will resend it again, we can continue in a DM for that part.
