Weird issues in 24H2

Ok, so I have a couple of questions regarding Win 11, since its kind of an inevitability by this point...

1. Unless I use a Win 11 24H2 WIM on a Win 10 22H2 usb disk, I can't get the install to go past 70-75%, it simply hangs there and never continues. Is that normal?
^ Use NTLite's own option to 'force' legacy setup in the settings page.

2. If I open a second Windows explorer window (not tab), the first one freezes. How do I stop this buggy behavior?
^ 'File Explorer (Extensions)' under System Apps is needed.

3. Trying to open the Pen section under settings crashes the app with a '0x000005 - Unexpected Parameters' error. How do I fix this?
^ Caused by AMD USB4 driver. Make sure to use only Windows 11 drivers from AMD driverpacks, they sometimes put Windows 10 and up, when they are not really windows 11 compatible.

4 The Wallpaper and Lockscreen sections take foreeeeeever to load up, to the point first thought they were crashing as well.
^ only TokenBroker "Web Accounts Manager" is needed to prevent this issue.

So, anything I can do to fix those issues? Or alternatively, can anyone point me to a 'barebones' NTLite preset I can modify to my needs?

5. Integrating Language Packs and FoD:
^ Make sure to integrate updates first, close NTLite and let it do its clean up, then open and integrate the features as updates.

But what type of changes are you making to 24H2, compared to a previous W11 or W10 image? Are you using the legacy Setup settings option to force the use of the old Setup client?

I'm not removing anything extra compared to my windows 10 (in fact I'm keeping Defender and Hyper-V which I previously removed, I'm also leaving some apps which I previously removed too, like calculator and terminal and notepad...), and no, I'm copying the WIM and autounattend.xml to a previously created USB drive. I wasn't aware there were an option to do that through NTLite. I've done Win10 Litening more times than I can count, but I rarely even touched 11 as it always felt like a terrible downgrade to me.

Does it work without the Setup.reg and all the updates?
NTL can integrate your updates depending on loaded image.

it does, but with the same issues, the Setup.reg just installs the AMD Adrenalin drivers and Realtek UWP App on the first login, they don't play as nice (Some FSR options and output formats aren't recognized properly or greyed out on my machine) if installed during setupcomplete stage.

These are its contents:

Code:
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Setup\AMDAdrenalin.exe -INSTALL

PowerShell -NoLogo -NoProfile -NonInteractive -InputFormat None -ExecutionPolicy Bypass Add-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackagePath C:\Setup\AppX\RealtekSemiconductorCorp.RealtekAudioControl_1.51.347.0_neutral_~_dt26b99r8h8gj.appxbundle -DependencyPackagePath C:\Setup\AppX\Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00_14.0.33519.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe.appx -LicensePath C:\Setup\AppX\RealtekSemiconductorCorp.RealtekAudioControl_dt26b99r8h8gj.xml

Sounds like a HW problem contra updated drivers ie. Screen even the Graphic Card is new.

So the modern setup is failing for some reason, that could be Windows related. How is the non-edited ISO?
I tested your preset on Win11 24H2, note that is without your REG, drivers and post-setup installers, no major issues that were described.

70-75% of setup could indeed be driver detection, try without integrating drivers, one of them might not be compatible.
If you find which, let me know especially if it wasn't supposed to be integrated - or if it was your setup.reg or similar.

Confirmed that clicking on Background opening in the Settings is delayed, debugging that and will reply when I know which one it is.

If a certain post-setup installer/driver requires a user profile, then switch it to After logon.

Thank you.

Sure thing, that is an easy fix. Vanilla windows does install no problems, its just Vanilla windows (bleeerch)

I will also try to redownload the windows (home, its the license I have, and yes I try on Pro first, so I'm not dealing with leftovers in case I have to do it for my other machine, currently on Linux) iso, just in case.

If a certain post-setup installer/driver requires a user profile, then switch it to After logon.
Will do!

OK, found it.

Enable 'Out of box experience (OOBE)' compatibility option (and with it Windows Setup one) after loading your preset.
That will protect 6 components.
Just realized those are not good to remove before setup, that is why it exists.
That also solves the slowed down Background selection and potentially all kinds of other issues.

Let me know how it goes.

Ok, so as a preliminary answer to the post above, which I'm testing right now, changing ISOs and removing the REGs and Drivers, do solve the Pen section of settings crashing out, and enabling the legacy setup does make the setup able to complete... but I still get the weird freeze of any windows of file explorer except the last one open. I'm sadly locked out of downloading the ISO directly from Microsoft, due to my ISP, but I tried ISOs from Massgrave, MDL and UUPDump, all three showing the same issue and I'm now reinstalling 10 to see if this also happen with the last update installed (I think I tested that, but wanted to be 100% sure). I'll try now with the OOBE option and report back.

[EDIT]: OK, so it is confirmed? OOBE Compatibility switch and not integrating the drivers completely fixes Issues 3 and 4 and NTLite's Legacy Setup Option bypasses the 1st issue (though not using it causes setup to return an error message and then halting entirely).

Issue #2 though... weirdly enough, it still happens, but only if you start a second instance of File explorer by right clicking a folder and selecting 'open in a new window'. If started from the taskbar icon, it works normally now. ...the plot thickens...

Some can be removed without any problems and others should be kept (we worked on this some time ago)

This is fixed by using the Use Legacy Setup Option in the Settings page. Still hangs on the Non-Legacy mode.

2. If I open a second Windows explorer window (not tab), the first one freezes. How do I stop this buggy behavior?
Still a problem, sometimes it happens only when starting a second explorer window from the context menu, sometimes it happens whenever starting a second file explorer window, sometimes it hangs even when you use the context menu to do something else, like installing a .inf driver!

I have no idea why, its just too random!

OK, so both 'File Explorer (Legacy)' and 'File Explorer (Extensions)' under System Apps are needed. Also some comomponent(s) in System, but I need more testing to figure out which.

3. Trying to open the Pen section under settings crashes the app with a '0x000005 - Unexpected Parameters' error. How do I fix this?

This was fixed by removing the drivers and reg file, I'm still doing some test on this to see which driver causes it exactly.

Yep, only TokenBroker "Web Accounts Manager" is needed to prevent this issue. Why it is related to Wallpapers its anyone's guess, but Lockscreen at least makes a little more sense.

PS: I am testing these in a Ryzen 5 7600 and a A620 motherboard with non-OC ram (4800MHz), not in a virtual machine. Its reasonably fast to reinstall in the 128gb NVME I use for testing, but even then, it takes a bit and in some cases I have to try component-by-component, so yeah some of the results still need further testing.

I found it, it was AMD USB4 driver. It is just marked as Windows 10 and above in the installer, but windows 11 hates it. it is also what causes the Pen error, though I can't even begin to imagine why. File Explorer Legacy is also not needed if the driver is not there, and of that list of protected components, only TokenBroker "Web Accounts Manager" is necessary. Maybe add the potential issues on their descriptions?

File Explorer Extensions - File Explorer may freeze randomly if the window loses focus when this component is removed.
TokenBroker "Web Accounts Manager" - Removing this component causes very long delays when accessing Themes and Lockscreen pages in settings.

or something.

On an unrelated note, how do I make NTLite see FODs for Windows 11 24H2? I want to add some languages and wireless display capabilities and no matter which folder I drop them, the program doesn't seem to find them.

Thanks, but not really, I was integrating a driver that is not required / recommended for windows 11 (but was needed for Windows 10). Once I stopped doing that, the problems stopped. Now if AMD is at fault, is because they are not making different driver installers for both OSs.
