Hello,
This is my first time using NTLite, Version 1.6.3.6400 64bit, License :Free non-commercial

I was following a tutorial from raymod.cc, (https://www.raymond.cc/blog/create-an-integrated-up-to-date-windows-7-install-disc/) the screens in their tut are old, but I made it through ok.

During the apply phase, a warning came up that the file that was trying to be written, "install.wim" was being used by another process.

I fired up System Internals Process Explorer in admin mode, found the handle, (and it was being touched by WIMSERV.EXE)
So I forced WIMSERV.EXE to end process, and then re-tried in NTLite, and it appeared to work.

But now I am at the screen and asking "what do i do next?"

I integrated the service pack updates for win7 pro 64bit, and I would also like to apply updates to win7 pro 32 bit, (the source dvd is a multi-version installer), but it appears my only actions available at this point is to exit the program File > Exit.

The status bar shows a file has been created in D:\d data\Personal\Steve\_FileStorage\Disk Image Files\win7installdvd_preslipstream\sources\install.wim Size 4.64 GB

I don't know why it located it there, but I'll leave it.

I have a couple of questions that don't appear in the document.

1. I did not check the checkbox to make an iso, so what do I do with the .wim file now?

2. Since I want to integrate SP updates for win7 pro 32 bit, so I open the NTLite program again, and repeat the same process of loading the 32 bit edition, and integrating updates and then click apply to generate another wim file?

3. Will that lave me with a modified wim file, or a second wim file?

4. How do I turn both updated editions into a single iso file that i can Rufus onto a usb drive?

Thanks for helping a total newbie

It depend on how you loaded the source:

Drag and drop the folder or the install.wim file to NTLite?
From toolbar button Add folder/wim file?

You can upload the autosaved preset to check what you have done, if you added updates, then you have a source/wim updated.

If you want to have updated an ISO, you should have added the folder containing the sources folder to NTLite and check the box Create ISO.

stevewa, please do not end WIMSERV.EXE, it is a key component to the WIM mounting process. That is the piece that was telling the tool that something is holding the file, other than it.
Do you maybe have an antivirus that could have been scanning the image when it was about to be saved?
Try suspending it or put the folders and the tool to the whitelist.

Have you tried retrying, if it allowed that?

Anyway, I recommend to start fresh, recopy the original ISO content and reload your previous preset then reapply. You can also then select Create ISO on the Apply page and do all at once.

To expand on Kasual's reply, you can easily create the ISO after the fact, from the image/ISO folder; By going to the Source page, and right-clicking the folder, then choosing Create ISO.
Or copy the files directly with Explorer to your previously bootable USB stick.

Let us know how it goes, especially if the busy file is not solved by the antivirus/antimalware scanner suspension.

Thanks.

Kasual thank you for your reply.
i loaded the source from the install dvd, using 7Zip to extract the contents of the dvd to a folder on a ssd drive, then clicked the NTLite tab: Image, Icon: Add, drop down arrow: "Image Directory"

I think I understand your message to mean I now have an updated WIM, but I did not previously know what a WIM was, I was only familiar with ISO. I think I now understand that a WIM is a file based version of an ISO image, and it can be used as a source for installation. Now I need to learn how to make a WIM bootable, fox example, do I copy the WIM file to a usb drive that I had previously made bootable?

Mounting an iso in a virtual cd/dvd drive can give quicker extration that using 7zip.

You have to copy over the full iso contents, not just a wim file.

nuhi thanks for your reply
I will try the suspension of the antivirus to see if I get past the "file in use" error message.
I did try to retry when I recvd the error msg but it occurred again immediately.

Now I understand how I can create an ISO from the Image History, but with the Windows Updates applied, the file will be too large to fit on a standard DVD.

Can you explain "Which" files I need to copy to a usb stick?
Or copy the files directly with Explorer to your previously bootable USB stick.

Do I just copy the install.wim file to a bootable USB stick, and then boot the blank computer from that usb stick?

ANd please forgive me for re-asking this, but I want to alos appliy windows updates to the 32 bit version. Do I just reapply the Integrate process?
Will that create a 2nd install.wim file just for 32bit? or will it only be 1 single install.wim file that contains both 32 bit and 64 bit installers?

Clanger Thanks for the link, I scanned it's contents and I see Rufus (which I have used previously), but I will try the 1st and 2nd links instead.

I think I understand the extraction process, but after I extract, I think I need to use NTLite to apply the Windows Updates to create a slipstreamed version of the installer, and after that, I am only interested in the install.WIM file? I don't want all the files from the original dvd, because they are old, and the new install.wim file should contain all of them plus the updates in a compressed format?

You cannot just copy the install.wim file to a usb key. You need to preserve the complete file and folder structure of the iso or no booty booty.
