Hello!

The Modem component (under Components -> Hardware support) is locked by the Recommended compatibility and is also on the Not Recommended template.
There are no notes on what kind of modem support this is about and what features we loose by removing it.

Does it touch any ethernet/wi-fi support?

Can someone share any light on it?

I guess the original reason was W8.1 Setup required it for laptops with integrated cell modems, allowing you to download critical updates when Ethernet or Wi-Fi access wasn't available. If that's the case, removing the modem component would be safe afterwards.

That said, the real question is it absolutely required for W10 or 11? I can remove all modem drivers, and 23H2 installs just fine.

Access network via a mobilephone attached could be one of the reasons as w10/ 11 gets more and more oriented towards that your mobilephone can interact with your PC/ Laptop.

When you're remotely accessing a smartphone, there is no need for a (wireless) modem. All you would need is the Wi-Fi or BT drivers.

In the old days modems was wired to get access to the net - so maybe it's recommended if anyone want to connect their "smart"phone via cable.
