Win7 x64 SP1 without WinSXS = installation failed?

OK, at least you have the same behavior ! I was afraid my NTLite install was broken or something.
Tell me if you are able to install the generated ISO when you have time, no rush. :)

ps: I just realized that you where the official French traductor of NTLite, thanks for the awesome job :D

I didn't have time today, but I'll try it tomorrow (it's been a while since I tried installing Windows 7 :D )

And you're welcome

I created some Win7-ISO, you`ll find them on my homeserver: [REDACTED]

Mod note: Per forum rules, links to private ISO's are not allowed. You may DM to individual users, but not post them in threads.
I`m sorry, i wasn`t aware of the rule.

Hello All :)

Thanks to Garlin, I made more tests with older NTLite to confirm it was working before, here are my results:
  • NTLite.9860 = Win7x64_WinSXS-removal_OK
  • NTLite.10089 = Win7x64_WinSXS-removal_OK
  • NTLite.10167 = Win7x64_WinSXS-removal_OK
  • NTLite.10204 = Win7x64_WinSXS-removal_OK
  • NTLite.10216 = Win7x64_WinSXS-removal_OK
  • NTLite.10258 = Win7x64_WinSXS-removal_ERR
  • NTLite.10263 = Win7x64_WinSXS-removal_ERR
So something changed for Win7x64 + WinSXS removal between 10216 (OK) and 10258 (ERR).
Maybe this change ?
"Components: Custom update cleanup forced if WinSxS store removal detected"

2024.12.10221

Fix

Image: 24H2 Boot.wim non-checkpoint cumulative update was skipped
Components: Cleaned SFC warnings up to the Lite template
Features: DISM ResetBase RPC error caused by Sandbox enabling

2025.01.10258

Upgrade

Image: Host Refresh compatibility and wizard improved
Now have less ‘replicate’ and ‘migrate’ errors in certain host-image combinations
Updates: File count included in the Extracted Updates Cache checks, it will recreate older cache
Components: Store compatibility now includes Network Profile for connection detection
Components: Custom update cleanup forced if WinSxS store removal detected
Components: Host Refresh compatibility split from Manual Setup
Components: ‘WinRE.wim’ and ‘WinRE’ merged on pre-24H2 images to avoid size difference in older presets
UI-Translation: Thanks for French (tistou77), Spanish (Plátano_RD)

Fix

Image: WinRE.wim saving was pulling install.wim as well, if both mounted

Older versions delete more folders/files than the latest ones, but the latest versions delete folders/files that were kept with older versions (only for Windows 7)
It must be one(s) of these folders/files
Nuhi will look at this

What custom cleanup actions are there for W7? Your options are limited until W8.1 or higher.

These are not my options, NTLite applies this option by itself (as the changelog indicates)

That's why it sounds suspicious. NTLite's always been limited by what type of WinSxS cleanup you can do on W7, and it's strange that a new feature becomes available for it in 2025 (5 years after W7 EOL'ed).

I asked once if a W10 host could do better DISM cleanup on a W7 image (compared to a W7 host), and abbodi mentioned it didn't matter because W7 images have limitations due to an older servicing design.

My NTLite host is under W10, but if it's usefull I should be able to try using NTLite with one Win7 host for my Win7 image.

Custom option is NTLite implementation, all others use Dism
And Custom removes a little more and faster than Dism but may be "less compatible"

Hello guys,

I'm using licenced NTLite to customize Win10 ISO without any problem since years, and I would like to come back to Win7 world :)
However, it seems I'm blocked when I want to remove the WinSXS component from Win7 :
What I'm missing ? :)
In my memory, this simple task was working fine a few years ago !

So I tested this process with latest version of NTLite (2026.01.10761), and it's now working perfectly :)
Thanks for the fix Nuhi & Tistou !
