This is the exact reason as to why we have Ntlite, allows us users to make windows as close as possible to what we want.
True, but how much longer can NTLite keep up with MS's nonsense? Also, to have maximum control the process requires that updates be disabled and that is not optimal as sometimes MS adds a feature or a change I might actually want.

Like, when they added dark mode improvements earlier this year. I wanted that. At first, I ran Windows Update and it ended up breaking two systems. So, I had to do a whole new build and install it just to get that.

And then that constant struggle to keep up with what breaks what and unwanted features that just can't be disabled at all, as discussed in couple of other threads already.

It really is just applications and game modding that is keeping me on Windows. Windows offers literally nothing besides a richer and more mature software ecosystem. It's just a platform to run my apps. If I could do all I want with equal simplicity on Linux, I would have dropped Windows already. But Linux has a lot problems of its own, too.

I know I can run many apps on Linux in wine, bottles, etc., but that adds a layer of complexity and it's not as reliable and straightforward and, by far, not as pleasant. I tried.

Internet Download Manager does not work on linux(debian) and a weird issue where i transfer files from debian using usb keys and windows always has to fix the file system stops me from using debian full time. Apart from that debian is 90% perfect for my online needs.

Them, politicians, deep state, Bond villains the lot of them.
It's not the place for this, but if you look at the human history, it has always been like that, going back all the way to the ancient times, through the middle ages and modern history: few sociopaths accumulating wealth and power at the cost of the entire society. It's something about humans that we allow this to happen.

I don't know what Internet Download Manager is but on Windows I use Open Video Downloader and it has a Linux AppImage release and it worked when I was messing around with Linux (Fedora KDE and Debian KDE). And for normal file download acceleration I simply used some Firefox extensions in the past.

BTW, yeah Debian is the best. I tinkered with CachyOS and ended up not liking it. I did some benching and for the things that I use both Debian and Fedora ran as fast as CachyOS, Debian 13 actually had an edge in some benchmarks. I'd use Debian too for its superior stability and robustness if I had an AMD GPU, but I have NVIDIA and that's some major pain to get drivers working on Debian. Pity, because I've used Debian on my servers for years and that's what I'm familiar with. It would be nice to run the same distro on servers and desktops. I was on Fedora for four months and I still kept typing "apt update". All my apps and games ran without issues on Debian, the somewhat outdated packages didn't cause me any trouble. Except maybe for Plasma itself, it's nice to have a fairly latest version of that.

Debian(live or installed) works well enough for my needs without having to add drivers for intel igpu's.
Firefox 115 esr(for w7/w8.1) is cranky but up to date FFesr on debian works much much better.
Windows 7 throws hissy fits on the old Latitude laptop but debian behaves itself.

True. I have an 8th gen Intel Latitude and both Fedora and Debian work better on it than on Windows 11: much faster and support every hardware feature on the first boot, no fuss. Windows 11 requires several additional drivers to be installed manually. Heck, I even installed Linux on a 4th gen Intel Apple Macbook Pro and every damn thing works including webcam, BT, all media and special keys and even double-tap to right-click.

On few other PCs that only have Intel IGPUs, Debian works fine too. My two newest desktops are very problematic though: NVIDIA GPUs-impossible for me to install on Debian, Realtek audio only partially works, BT and WiFi are also buggy and unreliable. I tried backported and custom kernels but in the end Fedora gave me better results, though audio remains a problem and NVIDIA drivers die now and then.

If things get really bad I'll get and AMD GPU and an USB DAC and maybe an add-on BT card for my headphones, and that will remove some of the friction, but this will be the last resort if MS really makes Windows unbearable.

Also with the above conversation I also use Windows 99 percent of the time. It's my everything system(work, videos, gaming, audio) and feel that updating to newer builds is really not necessary unless they really add value.

Been stuck on 23H for awhile now and don't plan on switching after the disaster of a time trying to get win 25H2 to do anything I wanted it to do without making a dump in it's os pants

Windows is like school.....they teach you everything even if you don't need it in your life but forget to do the basic things you truely need in life.

Wishing for a modular windows system someday where it is barebones and you answer a few questions and it installs what you need. If you end up needing something else it will just add it to the os. Nothing more nothing less.
