Windows 8.1

His main work workstation? Windows 10 i would have thought because you cant fully service windows 10 from windows 7, you can lite from a w7 host but you cant update a w10 image, i think its probably something to do with differences with dism in w7 and w10.
If i needed to fully service a w10 image then i would install 10 in dual boot configuration and service it from that partition.
 
I'm sure you're right for his NTLite Workstation. Just wondering if has a favor OS for his personal use.
 
Ive been hunting. AMD have changed their driver download pages and i cant find previous chipset drivers for w8.1. Windows 10 has its own native usb3 drivers so the chipset installer doesnt install much as it does on windows 7. IM using 8.1s own native usb3 driver on my amd system. There are some 8.1 drivers that can be found in the latest chipset packages, you'll need to look inside the w7 folders and see the read me files to see if they are for 8.1.

You will probably need smbus, usb filter(not sure about this one) and ide. I have had a look and on their main driver search by Chipset, they list the 9 series, yours i believe, and download and hunt in there. Not sure how you will get on with 8.1 raid drivers though, but they should be availible.
 
I was hoping that my Win7 RAID would get me through. Especially since I plan to upgrade from my running Win7.

I won't have time to hunt for drivers. Although the MSI website has (old) drivers for Win8 for my mobo that might get me started.

Ive got quite a few kosher amd chipset packages, i can hunt and upload from them if needed.
 
Thx. This brings up an interesting question. Windows 7 allows me to upgrade to Win8 in place. I wonder how M$ intended me to get any new drivers installed during the upgrade.
 
I dont know, ive never done an upgrade, always clean installs only and i always have my drivers ready to hand or already slipstreamed.
 
I understand. But when you have Dragon Naturally Speaking plus a bunch of other licensed software already installed & customized, it's easier (for me, anyway) to upgrade over the running OS.

I was reading up a bit on GPE just to see what I might be missing.

If I have it correct, GPE needs - or sometimes uses - Powershell.

But to me, Powershell is too big an attack surface. So I removed it in my Win7 build.

Will plan to do same in Win8.1.

So probably no GPE for me again.
 
As far as i know you can do without gpe and powershell because you can still use registry files and batch/cmd files to accomplish stuff. GPE isnt always availible on basic or starter editions, not sure about 8.1 core n because it has loads of group policy packages.

I avoid stuff that uses powersmell because its too complicated for my addled brain so i lok for bat and cmd files instead.

Im watching users on another forum loosing their minds over the new ltsb/c, its hilarious :D Even abbodi reckons its overrated so i thought i would see what i could do with 8.1.

Ive got ltsb n 2016(untouched iso) and 8.1 core n loaded. Ive stripped out all the apps and store(nothing else) from 8.1 with dism and im around 300MB larger than an untouched ltsb according to ntlites source page. Except i wont have all the crap 10 comes with. So 8.1 compares very favourably. :)
 
Yes because i want to make a new master image 1st using the official methods then save it. Next is update it then capture that image then wash it through ntlite with a lite preset. I may have to play around with the order because i want to get nets 3.5 and 472 fully baked in and installed on my master image.

I'll probably use NTLite to remove the Store and Apps. But if I want to do it via Win8, is that like using the Feature thing in Win7? Or is it command line stuff in 8?
 
If you like tweaking then keep group policy, its an absolute goldmine and there is lots of stuff in there, use it with regfromapp to harvest the tweaks as reggy files. Im switching pc 1 over to 8.1 tonight, bye bye 7.

The start menu on 8.1 and 10 is bloody awful. 8.1's tiles page takes up the whole screen for crying out loud.
To get something resembling a start menu get the new classic shell(now discontinued) fork, Open Shell Menu.
Run the installer and select Classic Start Menu only if you dont need the explorer and ie crap

To get the old task manager install Old Task Manager for Windows 10 from Winaero. Use the window thin borders reg file.
I really dont like adding stuff to correct windows shortcomings, i prefer reg files, but on occasion its obligitory.
