Windows 8.1

Ive never used any sort of fast startup/sleep or hibbernation, ever. And i disable prefetch and superfetch. Pc goes on then kettle n by the time kettle go ping pc ready to rock.
 
I finally got around to installing a printer on my new Win8.1 system.

Hmmm... the printer doesn't show up in "Devices and Printers". The whole window is blank.

I can print okay - just can't select a printer, can't set defaults for the printer, etc.

Researching the web, someone says that if you removed BlueTooth it breaks Devices and Printers.

Guess what I removed when I 'Lited this OS?
 
oops :D. You must like 8.1 then or you wouldnt be going through this all over again. hehe
Thats annoying though because i hate anything wireless, i just dont trust it, you pull a wire out and your safe. Even hifi has bluetooth and networking now for crying out loud. :mad:

So, nuhi, a trivial question: abbodi86 said first to update Win8.1 OEM with the SSU only. And then the rest of the updates.

And that's what I've been doing. It's the safest way to go and I haven't had any problems doing it this way.

But today I decided to see if NTLite would "red out" all the other updates if I hadn't integrated the SSU update first.

As you can see in the screen shot, NTLite didn't.

Win8.1 seems to work fine doing it this way. And it saves me a step in processing. (So is faster, workflow-wise.)

But I thought I would ask if the SSU (KB3173424) needs to be done first and alone?

I read in NTLite's listing that the KB is at the top. But of course, no reboot to "finish" the installation when I integrate all the updates at once.

FWIW, I read the Knowledge Base article on this KB. It's about an issue with Safe Boot. But I'm not using Secure Boot in my BIOS, if that makes a difference with this KB. (But I don't think NTLite knows that I'm not using Secure Boot.)

Never mind. I have been chasing a problem for the last day that was caused by me taking out these three Russian components.

Apparently they are needed to access "PC Settings" in Win8.1. That's probably why nuhi Recommends to keep them.

That nuhi is pretty smart.

nuhi Another trivia/trivial question: Why does NTLite say that Russian fonts are locked by Compatibility as "Recommended"?

I'm a US English user. No speakie Ruskie.

Thanks. I had unchecked Office Compatibility. Maybe it's a bug with NTLite, since the message is "Locked by compatibility: Recommended."
 
Okay, I finally got PC Settings to display in a 'Lite'd Win8.1 Pro. (I had earlier reported it wasn't working for me, and showed a 1 min video.)

Here's what I had to keep in for it to work

(Updated Nov 26, 2018.)

Tablet PC
Windows.Immersive Control Panel (That is buried as a child somewhere. Use the NTLite search feature to find it.)
Windows Search (That's in addition to Shell Search.)
Windows Store. ( removed the Store apps - BUT, you must keep VCLibs 2.0.)

As an aside, it seems you need to leave in BlueTooth system component. Okay to remove the hardware drivers. But apparently Win8.1 Metro requires BT component.

This file will disable Store scheduled tasks and service, these might be enough to keep store under control, remove the .txt file extension, run Elevated from PowerRun. System will restart after a 20second wait. There are other settings for store and apps in various places and i will find them later.

I am managing to catch up a bit, barebone services, scheduled tasks( i need to investigate a few) and tweaks will be uploaded by sunday.
Apart from a few tweaks which go into an image i am doing everything else post install with a cmd file.

Edit, ive moved the store.cmd.txt to post no1 so i dont have things scattered around. Ive also put the full scheduled tasks filke there buts its not finished yet. I lost the original and had to do it again. :(

Nearly all tasks are disabled except the following, most topics talk about disabling everything but i reckon its best to leave these 4 at default.
Microsoft\Windows\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\SvcRestartTask -- may affect windows and office license and activations.
Microsoft\Windows\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\SvcTrigger -- may affect windows and office license and activations.

Microsoft\Windows\Plug and Play\Device Install Group Policy -- Plug and Play affects driver installations.
Microsoft\Windows\Plug and Play\Device Install Reboot Required -- Plug and Play affects driver installations.
Disabling both Plug and Play entries may be possible if you slipstream drivers or manually install from Device Manager. I dont know if they will affect programs that need toinstall a driver, virtual cd/dvds for example. If in doubt install all your drivers and programs first then run this after but before disabling services.

nuhi I want to remove prefetch aswell as superfetch, seeing as you cant i take it it cant be done because you would have added it if it was.
 
Windows8.1-Barebone-Services-V3-2018-11-26.reg.txt uploaded to post no1. Remove the .txt file extension, run Elevated from PowerRun, Restart.
Use Reg Converter if you want convert to a batch file.

Warning - Barebone services configuration with 136 services disabled, for an offline pc because it disables networking. This beauty is built for my needs only and there is no reset services to default. Use At Your Own Peril. There are some more i need to test in a vm.

Final version being tested, will include setting all services to the required values, Automatic Manual and Disabled.
Warning - Only run this file after you have installed everything, updates - msu's and cab's, .nets, c++, changed Windows Features, installed exe and msi installer programs, drivers(manual and installers) and other tweaks, it must go last.

I have split the Audiosrv and Multimedia Class Scheduler services so i can disable MMCS, W8.1-Barebone-Services-Audiosrv-MMCSS-split.reg.txt, when i working with audio and video they are the only programs running.

That's a lot of services disabled. I don't think even Black Viper has that many.
 
141 services disabled out of 171 on a vm and it still boots. If i manage to get anymore then i gotta test them on a hardware install with my programs to make sure the os is stable. I may get away with changing startup types which wont make much of a difference. I get the most from my modest hardware with some simple tweaking.

I got to 135 on a running system and i could start bricking a system with each service i disabled from there on so im testing them in VirtualBox, im not gonna do a full install everytime i brick a test install, making vm clones is easier. XP works with just 4 services running even if you just go lite on components, in reality you need a few more running but it boots and is stable with 4. I can get excellent results just going Lite with Bareboned services and scheduled tasks disabled and by applying them post install i only need 3 images, untouched iso source, updated captured image and the final lite image. :cool: We have blackviper2009 but i dunno if thats im.

151 services disabled out of 170 and still boots, time to stop.
Ram usage is the same as w7 bareboned with services disabled and default w7 install with barebone services.
Going this low means a lot of things dont work but it works for me. I may roll back a bit but it wont affect ram usage much.

Edit - Thought some people might want to compare with a standard services configuration, ram usage and handles threads processes.
Left is barebone(151) services, right is default services(taken quickly after logon), the install os is the same on both.

Question, mobsync.exe. It runs at every startup(vanilla install, just updated), ive tried various tweaks to stop it but they dont work. What component/s is it part of? What do i do if i just want to stop it on a vanilla install?

It’s associated with a device like a Windows Mobile phone with ActiveSync, a SQL Server installation, or if you have Internet Explorer (a feature in IE 6 not in IE7 or above) set to synchronize pages for viewing offline". It wont suit many apu and igpu users because there are no video drivers, amd have given up on it(bad viggy) but nvidia have 8.1 drivers so have gpu card users covered. Only rule out 8.1 when you have tried it and know it doesnt work for you. I dont have aero crashing on me(w7 :( ), it responds well with dism and packages, good if you like the metro ui, it doesnt break as much as 10 and you dont get the monthly w10 fun and games. :)
 
I have no idea why people have/had issues with drivers, are they lazy?
Tried 8 once, when beta and still using XP and i would prefer to use 3.1 instead of 8 if there where compatibility.

Aero has never crashed on me (7), i started using 7 few years ago, after XP didn't got supported USB 3.
