Turns out that the Win7 Registry Tweak works on Win8.1 too. (I read on the web that a lot of Win7 tweaks will work on Win8.)

I have found that the nice thing about using NTLite to run this Tweak is that NTLite does it before Permissions are set. This seems to make a difference compared to running the Tweak after Windows is installed.
 
I use Sordums Power Run to run regedit, add reg files or run batch/cmd files. Could you upload that reg file please?

Id get rid of network, documents music pictures and videos. I have never used them since i stopped using xp.
 
Yeah, I got rid of documents, music, etc. Had to hack the registry to remove their entries.
 
How? I found options in winaero tweaker.
You may find this article on Ryzen 2(3000) series interesting. If those are th egains from Ryzen 1st gen then imagine the gains over Bulldozer, woof.

How fast does Win8.1 boot for you? (Clanger is out of the competiton because 1) she turned off the hibernation file and 2) because she uses an SSD.)

It takes 30 seconds for my new Win8.1 to boot. My Win7 boots faster. Win8.1 is supposed to boot faster. (This is on a WD Black Caviar spinning drive.)

I read here in one of the threads about a "30 second delay" built into Win8.1, which sometimes occurs when you have a solid desktop background. I didn't have a "delayeddesktopswitch" in my registry. I added on, and set its hex value to 5. No Change.

So then I found that, for this this faster boot, Win8.1 uses a "hybrid" boot (not to be confused with hybrid drives, half SSD, half spinning). The hybrid boot feature needs the hibernation file.

So I turned it on. And I enabled the "Turn on faster" feature buried in Power Options.

But it still takes 30 seconds for my Win8.1 to boot.

It might be that Comodo is causing the delay, because Comodo firewall has to lock down a lot of things before Windows is fully up and running.

Still, I was wondering what others are seeing for boot speeds - on spinning drives.
 
Ive got a few things disabled that make a difference. Wallpaper and amount of desktop items can affect boot times. If you need a lot of desktop stuff, stick em all in a single folder helps, i use a folder on C:\ instead oof the desktop sometimes. I wonder if using raid affects boot times, 2 or more spinners that need to seek and if they are fragmented,,, Normally i only have OverDrive, 7 Taskbar Tweaker and Textify set to run at startup. If you got a load of programs set to run and they are on hdds they will slow things down. Use AutoRuns to see what loads at boot.

To be honest i never care about boot times, i turn the pc on then i put the kettle on so when tea is done both of us are ready to rock. I will list what i have disabled and ipload my tweaks batch file later on. I sorta ignored boot times because defragging a hdd shortens drive life, i had hdd's ive rarely if ever defragged and they are my main storage so they do get a lot of use. Boot and project drivces i regularly defragged only lasted a few years.

Nope. I mean this.

I agree on boot times. Usually I don't boot. (I leave my computer on all the time and have run Win7 without rebooting for, like, months at a time.) It's just that 1) lately I'm booting back and forth between Win8.1 and Win7 and 2) I was curious why Win8.1 isn't any quicker at booting.

I have defragged. I can never tell the difference. (And I'm only running a single drive for the OS drive. Too hard to get the OS to boot on RAID. If I cared enough I would buy an SSD for the OS drive. Prices have really come down lately.)

Also, I hardly have anything on my desktop in Win8.1. Only a few start up items, mostly Comodo.
 
I'll look at that tweak in a while, thanks for the heads up. The wd green 120 ssd in this machine was aroung 30gbp, the new crucial 120gb was 21gbp. I get 111 usable gb once formatted on both and i can justify a cheap ssd even for testing. Buy direct from crucial if you can.
 
What are these? The black bar with icons on the far right and the time and date box on the left?

Thanks. Once i know the official name i can disable them, i dont use em and they bug me.
 
Got 2 Crucial MX500 500gb ssd's coming, going to run a dual XP(nLited of course) and 8.1 system(NTLited), not dual boot. Each os will be installed in isolation. Dam glad i got 2 systems worth of XP capable hardware.
 
I am finding that I have to leave Store in if I want to see PC Settings. (Windows +C, then Settings then Change PC Settings.) Even with 1.7.1.6593.

On the hybrid boot using the hibernation file: I didn't read the fine print closely enough. In Windows 8.1, it says that the fast start option only works when you shut down your computer.

That's not the same as Restarting your computer, which is what I do 99.99% of the time. So I disabled hibernation, since it doesn't help for my usage.

BTW, I found that when I don't have Comodo installed, I get a much faster boot of Win8.1.

So it appears that Comodo, loading all its drivers, etc. is slowing down the Win8.1 boot for me. (In fact, Win7 boots a little faster for me. 30 seconds.)

Fast start is something between sleep/suspend and hibernation and not a real shutdown, never liked.
